Mohtaraf font by Kameel Hawa wins the TDC Certificate of Typographic Excellence.
For the second time the TDC prestigious Certificate of Typographic Excellence 2014, goes to Kameel Hawa of AlMohtaraf design house, for the recently developed typeface named after the design house: MOHTARAF. In 2007, our typeface Midan was granted this same award, after having won the Linotype Arab type design conference in Dubai and the Herman Zapf honorary award.
Mohtaraf typeface is the Design House signature typeface as it had originally inspired the actual Mohtaraf logotype. The older unfinished version was left in a rudimentary state for many years, until last year when Kameel Hawa decided to redraw it nearly from scratch. He was assisted in finalizing the drawings by Jeddah based designer Abdurrahim Fuad. Then, and under the supervision of design director Yara Khouri, a dedicated type designer in Beirut office, Patil Gabodigian developed the full alphabet and in 3 weights, ready for use.
Our entry in the TDC Typeface Design Competition has been selected by the judges to receive the “Certificate of Typographic Excellence”. It will be included in the Annual of the Type Directors Club, Typography 36, and will also be shown at the 61st Awards Exhibition (TDC61) in New York City. This year 22 winners were selected from over 216 entries from 37 countries. Besides being exhibited in New York City, the winners will also be included in 7 exhibitions that will tour cities in the United States, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Japan, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
